Definition of Classification:
The Athletic Facility Specialist performs a variety of tasks including field turf restoration, event and game day preparation, care for landscape, aquatic chemical cleaning, and proper maintenance and upkeep of the equipment and associated athletics facilities.
Reporting to the Athletics Facilities Supervisor, this position serves as a member of the team responsible for the overall maintenance of the athletic fields and the aquatic center.
This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Completes field maintenance such as aerating crosscutting, mowing, edging vertical cutting, de-thatching, irrigation, fertilization, weed abatement, and top-dressing as directed.
- Paints and marks fields under NCAA rules and provides set-up, and clean-up of facilities for practices, contests, and events including equipment goal posts, track and field pits, dugouts, bench areas, etc.
- Cleans, monitors, and inspects athletic facilities, surrounding areas, and equipment for maintenance and safety concerns.
- Maintains landscape for associated facilities and upkeep of trees, shrubs and hedges which may include planting pruning, trimming, spraying, fertilizing and weeding.
- Provides dirt management to baseball and softball fields including infield skin, baselines, warning tracks, pitching mounds and home This includes regular dragging; screen drag and moisture control.
- Contributes to the decision-making process on the feasibility of playing on fields depending upon weather and field conditions.
- Inspect and maintain exterior/interior areas of the Aquatic Center facilities, including pool, grounds, and equipment for cleanliness, appropriate appearance and safety, and make minor repairs and adjustments as needed.
- Adheres to safety procedures and safe work practices.
- May attend training as assigned.
- Performs all other related duties or special projects as assigned.
Qualifications Guidelines
Any combination equivalent to, but not limited to, the following:
Experience/Training/Education:
Required
- A high school diploma.
- One (1) year of experience in a similar position.
- Must obtain a current CPR, AED, and First-Aid Certificate within three (3) months of hire.
- A valid California Class C CA drivers' license with a good driving record is required. Note: Out-of-state licenses are valid until appointment. A valid California Class "C" driver's license must be obtained within ten (10) days of appointment (in accordance with CA Vehicle Code 12505c).
Note: A physical examination demonstrating physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Working knowledge of methods, techniques, and strategies for construction preparation and management of athletic field turf and competition facilities.
- Knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures.
- Communicate effectively and follow instructions, both verbally and in writing.
- Possess a strong attention to detail.
- Ability to multi-task and maintain campus standards.
- Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Ability to operate standard field turf maintenance equipment.
- Ability to foster strong, positive relationships and align both internal and external resources to achieve university objectives.
- Ability to exercise discretion and work with confidentiality.
- Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.

Working Conditions:
This is primarily a heavy work classification with employees working in an outdoor environment, moving around campus with frequent exposure to inclement weather. This position requires flexibility to work evening and weekend hours. This position requires physical activity, endurance, and agility to perform the required duties in a safe and productive manner.
Physical Demands:
Incumbents regularly stands and walks for long periods; grasp, use hands and fingers to operate tools and machinery; balance, reach with hands and arms; stoop or kneel or crouch; climb stairs; frequent and/or occasional crawling, pushing, and pulling; and lift, carry and/or move objects typically weighing up to 10-25 pounds and on occasion up to 50 pounds; exposure to dust/dirt, noise, temperature extremes, and repeated exposure to odors/fumes with occasional exposure to hazardous equipment movement and vibration; speak clearly and distinctly to answer telephones and to provide information; see to read fine print and operate computer; hear and understand voices over telephone and in person.

HIRING RANGE: Anticipated hiring range is near or at the minimum of the classification, commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training. The University of Redlands is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The full salary range for this position is defined as the Full Pay Range. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position defined as the Hiring Range. Placement within the Hiring Range is determined by internal equity, and relevant qualifications.
BACKGROUND CHECK: Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. The University will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current employee who was conditionally offered the position.
DRIVER'S LICENSE CHECK: Possession of a valid Driver's License is required for certain positions. Employees in positions that require a valid Driver's License will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.
PHYSICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMS: For certain positions typically in Public Safety, Facilities, Athletics and Information Technology Services departments, employment is contingent upon a candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs. Public Safety Officers, in addition to a pre-employment physical exam, will also be required to pass a psychological evaluation.
